- Emily Marion | Association House
< Back Emily Marion Director of Behavioral Health Serving first as a clinician, Emily came to Association House to counsel youth and adults. Since that time, she has been a Supervisor of the Community Support Team (CST), Supervisor of Community Reintegration and Support, and most recently, the Williams Quality Administrator, working with team-based intensive case management programs, including transitioning participants from institutional psychiatric care to independent living in the community. Currently as Director of Behavioral Health, she oversees the mental health programs, substance abuse services, and services for individuals with developmental disabilities. Emily began her career in clinical services as an intern at the International Children’s Center through Heartland Alliance assisting mostly Central American children, and as a human rights intern through a University of Chicago- placement at Casa Alianza in Guatemala City on the Family Reintegration team. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has a Bachelor’s of Science in psychology from Loyola University Chicago and a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration. Originally from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Emily has lived the past 15 years in multiple Chicago neighborhoods. She’s proud to be a part of the team at one of Chicago’s original settlement houses and enjoys working across diverse cultures and collaborative service disciplines, while empowering, advocating for, accompanying, supporting, and learning from Association House participants. Emily enjoys dancing, camping and gardening and rooting for the Chicago White Sox.

We offer a variety of health education services, cost-free to participants, to address critical community health needs. Check out our workshop series today! Community Health Our Community Health programs address many of the chronic community health issues facing low-income populations in underserved Chicago neighborhoods. Surveys have found that prevalent issues include food insecurity, obesity, sexually transmitted infections, diabetes, heart disease, and mental health issues. We offer a variety of health education services, cost-free to participants, to address these critical community health needs. Jose received his Bachelor’s in Accounting from Saint Xavier University, and after graduating college, he took on a role as a CFO. < Back Jose Garcia Jose received his Bachelor’s in Accounting from Saint Xavier University, and after graduating college, he took on a role as a CFO. Wanting more, a few years later, Jose accepted a role as President and CEO of Northwest Community Credit Union. Jose loves to get involved in the community in his free time. He serves as a member on many other boards in the Chicagoland area. Why I Serve? Jose works for the credit union industry which operates on the philosophy of “people helping people” resulting in personal and economic health. He is pleased to be aligning himself with the Association House of Chicago which similarly embraces this philosophy as it reaches a multicultural population.
- Filiberto Rios | Association House
< Back Filiberto Rios Director of Community Health and Workforce Development Filiberto serves as Director of Community Health and Workforce Development Programs. He oversees community health education and intervention initiatives, as well as workforce development and technology training programs. He has over five years of experience developing and implementing programs to assist underserved, racial and ethnic minority, and at-risk urban populations. Filiberto originally joined Association House in 2006 as an Americorps Volunteer. Filiberto holds a Bachelor’s in Psychology from Loyola University Chicago and a Master of Science in Nonprofit Management from Spertus Institute. I strongly believe that Association House continues in the settlement house tradition of working toward a healthier community. I am proud to work with a dedicated team, who work to empower and elevate residents in areas of education, mental health, and employment.

- Margarita Rosas | Association House
< Back Margarita Rosas Director of Finance Margarita Rosas (she/her) serves as Director of Finance. Reporting directly to the President, Margarita collaborates with the other members of the leadership team, as well as the Board of Directors, to support the financial goals of the organization managing a $17M budget. Margarita brings 20 years of experience in process improvement, systems design, project management, strategic financial planning, monitoring and evaluation, public finance & policy planning across various organizations at the local, national, and international level. Before joining Association House, Rosas served as the Director of Finance with New York Sun Works, driving financial functions and performance. In her five years, Rosas was instrumental in expanding the organization from 90 to over 400 school partners, impacting 120,000+ students annually. Born and raised in Colombia, Margarita has been an international consultant for the International Monetary Fund, deputy director for social investments with the Colombian national government, and Founder of New Life for Everyone, a foundation that supports educational opportunities for over 400 children in marginalized communities in Bogotá. Margarita holds a Master’s of Public Administration from Cornell University, a Master’s in Regional Planning with an emphasis in Local Economic Development, and a dual BA/BS in Business Administration and Economics, both from Universidad de Los Andes. As a Latina, an immigrant, and a mother of a child with disabilities, Margarita feels strongly connected to Association House’s mission for inclusion and creating opportunities for marginalized communities.

PSR is a day program offering group and individual services to build relationships and teach independent living skills to maximize self-sufficiency. Psychosocial Rehabilitation How We Help Psychosocial Rehabilitation (PSR) is a therapeutic day program that offers group and individual services aimed at building relationships and teaching independent living skills to maximize participants’ self-sufficiency and role function in the community. Our Approach Participants engage in the program anywhere between six months and two years depending on their individual needs and treatment goals. The program covers a wide range of topics, designed to help participants manage their mental illness, stay healthy, and increase their ability to live independently. The program meets Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. Breakfast and lunch are served daily, and several breaks are scheduled throughout the day. All services are provided in Spanish and English. Experiences in the program: Groups and individual skill building activities’ Attend local events and attractions Recreational activities Mental health advocacy opportunities NAMI walk for mental health awareness Visiting local museums and music events Through group we learn: Coping Skills and Self Advocacy Symptom Management for: Depression, Anxiety, Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia Medication Management Healthy Living and Relationships Social and Communication Skills Safety at Home and in the Community Money Management and Decision Making "In PSR, I learned anger management, communication skills, and how to take care of my mental health. If it hadn’t been for Association House, I would probably be dead or living on the streets." - Program Participant Eligibility & Costs We provide services to individuals with Medicaid coverage at no cost to the participant. We accept all Medicaid plans. We are unable to accept any private insurance. 92% of participants will increase their understanding/knowledge regarding their mental illness and medicine management. Kathleen received her MBA at DePaul University and worked her way up at BMO Harris Bank as the Director of Business Transformation. < Back Kathleen Smith Kathleen originally attended the University of Iowa where she received her bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance while simultaneously competing as a division 1 athlete. After her time in Iowa came to a close, she came to Chicago where she completed her Master of Business Administration at DePaul University in the Charles H. Kellstadt Graduate School. She then worked her way up the ladder at BMO Harris Bank and now resides as the Director of Business Transformation. Why I Serve? Kathleen is hoping to be able to continue to support the mission of the Association House alongside the staff and fellow broad members; perhaps bringing in a different perspective and new ideas around how to grow the Association House both deep and wide with expanded outreach in the community.

< Back Tanya A. Wade Senior Director of Clinical Operations Tanya joined Association House in 2013 and currently serves as our Senior Director of Clinical Operations where she monitors program performance, provides clinical supervision and direction, and ensures participants receive high-quality clinical services and care. Tanya is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and originally joined Association House as a Continuity of Care Coordinator. Tanya graduated from Hofstra University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. In 1998, Tanya moved to Chicago and received a Master of Social Work degree from Loyola University Chicago. Tanya then honed her clinical skills as a trainer, diagnostician, and therapist within Child Welfare and Community Mental Health. Tanya works at Association House because she has a personal commitment to clear the path for participants and staff alike to realize their full potential. She believes that Association House leads by example; opens doors, encourages ideas, nurtures healing, and empowers change.

Nancy is the head of Talent at Adtalem Global Education, where she leads the enterprise-wide Talent Acquisition and Talent Development Teams. < Back Nancy Johnson Nancy is the head of Talent at Adtalem Global Education and leads the enterprise-wide Talent Acquisition and Talent Development Teams. Her team is responsible for all practices related to the recruitment and selection of top talent at all levels of the organization, executive assessments, investments in leadership and colleague professional development and efforts to create an engaging and effective organization culture aligned to the business growth strategy. Nancy also holds a BS in Business Management with a Minor in American Studies from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and an MBA from DePaul University in Chicago. Why I Serve? Nancy is passionate about helping others reach their full potential, regardless of their starting point and life’s challenges that may come their way. She loves her work at Association House, helping to uplift and support those with significant life’s challenges. Working with the “House” is a continued reminder to Nancy that we all are called to be our “brothers (and sisters) keepers.” She believes this work keeps her grounded and provides perspective on what is really important in life.

Healthy Lifestyles offers various adult and child friendly workshop series to help increase awareness, knowledge, and skills for healthy practices. Health Education How We Help Healthy Lifestyles is our health education program that aims to increase awareness, knowledge, and skills for healthy practices to help decrease risk factors for nutrition-related health problems and chronic diseases through a series of adult and child-friendly workshops. Depending on the series, each workshop ranges from 30 to 60 minutes. Cancer This workshop provides an overview of several different types of cancer, including lung, skin, breast, and prostate cancers. We cover risk factors, preventative measures, treatment, and diagnosis. We discuss how food and healthy eating can affect our health and influence our health outcomes. Cooking demonstrations include healthy recipes, tips on making smarter choices for takeout, and understanding food labels. Resources from National Cancer Institute, CDC, Mayo Clinic, Harvard Health, Cancer Center. Diabetes This workshop provides basic information, symptoms, and everyday diabetes care for newly diagnosed people. Topics include Type I, Type II, and Gestational Diabetes. Workshops cover risk factors, controlling blood sugar levels, and possible treatments. Our cooking demonstrations consist of diabetic-friendly and low-sugar recipes. Resources from American Diabetes Association, CLOCC, Mayo Clinic, CDC. Asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease These workshops provide background knowledge and education on asthma, allergies, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Participants will be able to recognize symptoms, risk factors, treatments and management skills. We also discuss the range of food and seasonal allergies. Cooking demonstrations incorporate finding and swapping out certain ingredients to manage any food allergies. Resources from Harvard Health, CDC, American College of Asthma, Allergy, and Immunology, American Lung Association. Cardiovascular Disease These workshops include learning more about the heart and how to take both preventative and proactive measures for heart disease, cholesterol, high blood pressure, and strokes. We cover heart-healthy foods that can help with specific heart issues and concerns. Cooking demonstrations include heart-friendly recipes. Resources from American Heart Association, Harvard Health, CDC. Mental Health First Aid Mental Health First Aid is a nationally recognized training that teaches participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness in their family, friends, community, and workplaces. We offer Adult and Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainings in English and Spanish, in-person or virtually. The in-person training requires an 8-hour time commitment. The virtual training is six hours with pre-work required. Learn More “Many of our participants do not have access to mental health resources where they live. Some people do not even know where or how to seek help. Other individuals may not be willing to talk about their mental health issues due to stigma. The skills and tools learned from the MHFA trainings provide individuals with the skills, support, and resources needed to aid a person that is going through a potential mental health crisis.
