Diabetes among Puerto Rican adults living in Humboldt Park is almost 21 percent – three times the national average, according to a study by the Sinai Urban Health Institute.

Hundreds of residents of Humboldt Park are expected to line up for free activities aimed at promoting good health and educating them about diabetes.  These include screenings by the KidneyMobile, Zumba Fitness classes, and the opportunity to talk with diabetes educators. Four Chicago Fire players, including team captain Logan Pause, will be on hand to meet fans and sign autographs. Giveaways include 175 soccer balls, five pairs of tickets to a Chicago Fire game, children’s plates and placemats to promote healthy eating and more!

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, the American Diabetes Association, Walgreens, Novo Nordisk and the Chicago Fire Soccer Club have teamed to battle diabetes among Latinos with La Buena Salud Es Vivir (Good Health is Living). The partnership has hosted numerous events at Toyota Park before Fire games, and is for the first time bringing their healthful messages directly into a community at high risk for diabetes.
